A prophecy
All the outskirts were dear to Don Bosco, because they were the most suitable for his apostolate among poor and stray boys, but few works occur in such a prophetic way as the one that began, fifty years after the death of the Saint, in the Southwest zone of Turin, next to the establishments of the Fiat. Don Bosco’s dream was realized thanks to the meeting of two men able of great enterprises, don Pietro Ricaldone (IV successor of Don Bosco) and the senator Giovanni Agnelli (founder of the Fiat). It was so decided a work to direct young people to a life of "good Christians and honest citizens. On an area of around 40 thousand square meters, the project foresaw the oratory and the church, the theatre, the schools, the workshops and the play area. The work was entitled to the memory of Edoardo Agnelli, senator Giovanni’ son, deceased in an air accident in 1935.
The first stone... and the others
The laying of the first stone was on 3rd July 1938. On 19th April 1941 there were the inauguration with the Cardinal Fossati. The young people of the neighbourhood didn't delay to take part in the games, the associations, the “filodrammatica”.
The first school... and the developments
On 20th September 1943, the evening school started with 15 students in the 1st course and 8 students in the 2°. On 4th October the day school started as well. The war made all much more difficult. On 24th November 1943, during an air raid, some bombs partly destroyed the church and other buildings. But with the end of the war the number of the students increased considerably. The elementary school adds to the business school and then the professional industrial training. The widening of the places started since 1946 with the building of the sheds for the workshops. At the end of September 1953, the school, legally recognized by now, had its precise and specific address. The students were 900 and the number was increasing. A new widening project started: a very large workshop to be erected on 4.800 square meters, prepared by the Fiat Constructions Division. Once finished, it gave the impression of a work combining "study" and "job". Nearby a great job for the preparation and the cultural formation, the institute always took care of the sporting activity: football, volleyball, basketball, athletics. Between 60 and 62, a new widening: a three-storey building with classrooms, gym, refectory for the students and some areas for the salesianis. In 1966 the institute took a new form: a “Scuola Media” (which replaced the training course since 1963) and a “Istituto Tecnico Industriale” so structured: a technical “biennio” equal for everybody and a technical “triennio” divided in three specializations (mechanics, electronics, elettromechanics). At the same as the technical innovations of the industry and also thanks to the constant Fiat Install Direction and Service, the inaugurations of the laboratories followed each other: technological laboratory, laboratory of fluid cars, laboratory of electric measures, laboratory of foundry, laboratory of electronic measures and, the Center of Didactic Electronics. Today as yesterday, seriousness and constant commitment, availability to the educational intervention and the religious salesian proposal are requested. Seriousness of preparation and professionalism are always offered. The constant updating that has always constituted the feather in the cap of the institute, by now projected by the computer science toward new frontiers and finishes, continues, today as always Don Bosco’s witticism: "I want my salesianis to be in the vanguard of the progress!"
